Here we are, with Earn to Die, a series of games that take you to the dusty remnants of a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested wasteland. Sound good? Of course it does, because really, who doesn't love the zombie apocalypse? Or at least, playing around in a simulated zombie apocalypse that is. But that's enough of that for now, let's have a look at these games.

In this, the first of three reviews, we'll be looking at the first Earn to Die. As the first in the series, it's still got a few kinks that haven't quite been ironed out, but for the most part it's a solid game with solid gameplay.

You go through the game trying to get as far as you can each day, edging nearer and nearer to the helicopter that will rescue you. How far you're able to go depends on your fuel and in no small part, how well you drive. The farther you get each day the better, but along the dusty trail are various obstacles that will slow you down or even stop you dead, not least of which are the living dead. The zombies don't really pose all that great of a challenge, especially since you're moving about in a heap of metal that weighs significantly more than the average zed.

Of those heaps of metal, you'll start out with a dinky and beat-up old VW bug. It's not much, but it'll get you some distance before stopping. It doesn't have all that much mass to it, so hitting zeds will slow you down a bit with each hit. What's worse is hitting crates. As your bug doesn't have much oomph to it, hitting a stack of wooden crates without a booster will be not unlike hitting a wall. You can, of course, upgrade the Beetle with weapons, better boosters, better tires, etc... but it would be wiser to build up your funds for better and bigger rides.

The next ride on the list is a blue pickup truck. It's more massive, it hits harder, and it too can be upgraded. You'll be plowing through zombies with it, and it goes much faster than the bug, but it's not quite as good as the final car: the truck. Sure, it's not a complete sixteen wheeler, but it packs a ridiculously powerful punch and will easily plow through anything that you can hit. Add the guns and powerups that you can buy for it, and you'll soon have a nigh unstoppable monstrosity of steel.

The general strategy for the game is to keep going. Don't stop for anything, and use your boosters liberally but wisely. That means don't use them on flat stretches of land as that won't really do much more than accelerating you into obstacles faster. Instead, hit the boosters on a ramp, allowing you to sail over obstacles and crush any that remain beneath your tires. Your guns can also help, but your ammo has a limit to it so it's not all that good an idea to rely too much on it.
